Vincent van Gogh born 30 March 1853 and died 29 July 1890, was a Dutch-born artist whose work had a far-reaching influence on modern art for its emotional impact and bold and vibrant colors. Throughout his life, he suffered from anxiety and progressive mental illness. At the age of 37 he committed suicide by shooting himself. He was largely an unknown artist. While a contemporary of Oscar Monet, Pierre Augustine Renoir and other impressionist artists, Vincent Van Gogh is considered a post-impressionist painter.

As an artist, Vincent van Gogh was little appreciated during his career that encompassed most of his lifetime. But his fame grew in the years following his death. Today, he is considered by many as one of history's greatest painters and among the most important contributors to modern art.

Van Gogh started painting late in his twenties, and he struggled to find his style for most part of his life. He created his best-known works during his final two years. During his lifetime, he produced more than 2,000 art pieces, which includes around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. Today many of his paintings, drawings and sketches are among the world's most recognizable and reproduced art pieces. Many of his paintings are being sold at Sotheby's and Christie's Auction houses for millions of dollars each.

Van Gogh's late works show an artist at the height of his ability, completely in control and "longing for concision and grace".
